Accessible Sanitation for Our Elders
Executive Summary
The main goal of the Swing for Seniors Health and Sanitation Campaign is to enhance the dignity and well-being of older persons by improving access to safe, hygienic, and supportive environments. In line with the International Day of Older Persons 2025 theme, empowering older persons through inclusive systems for health and well-being, the campaign seeks to tackle critical challenges of hygiene, sanitation, and preventive care that directly impact the quality of life in old age. By bringing communities together through sport and purposeful fundraising, the initiative highlights our shared responsibility to ensure that ageing is celebrated as a stage of vitality, respect, and continued contribution to society.

In Kenya, over 80% of older persons face daily challenges accessing safe, hygienic, and dignified sanitation facilities. Age related conditions like arthritis, reduced mobility, and chronic illness exacerbate these challenges. The goal of this campaign is to renovate and construct 5,000 elder friendly sanitation units in eight underserved counties. The project aims to reduce sanitation related illnesses by 50%, restore independence and dignity for 60% of older persons, and build community level awareness through training and inclusive WASH campaigns. CPF Foundation seeks co-funding, technical expertise, and community engagement support from partners with a passion for inclusive development.

About CPF Group Foundation.
The CPF Group Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the CPF Group, a leading social security and financial services provider in Kenya. Our mission is to uplift vulnerable populations through innovative, inclusive, and sustainable interventions that improve quality of life. Our vision is a society where all people, regardless of age, ability, or background, live with dignity and have access to basic needs and opportunities.
Key achievements include:
· Implementation of the Golden Homes housing project for vulnerable elders.
· Community based healthcare awareness drives across counties.
· Active partnerships with county governments and local NGOs on elder care initiatives.
· Policy and advocacy for older person rights.
The Problem
James, a 72-year-old widower in Kisii County, wakes up each morning with the hope of a peaceful day. But each trip to the pit latrine outside his home is a test of strength and fear. The steep path, lack of support rails, and slippery surfaces have led to several falls. What should be a basic human right, a safe and accessible sanitation, has become a daily ordeal. ....James is not alone.

Across Kenya, thousands of older persons like James’s face similar indignities due to inadequate and unsafe sanitation facilities. While great strides have been made in improving access to sanitation for the general population, the needs of the elderly have remained overlooked.
According to the Kenya Demographic Health Survey (KDHS), only 65% of Kenyans have access to adequate sanitation. Among older persons, this percentage is over 80% due to low incomes, isolation, mobility challenges, inadequate infrastructure, and neglect in policy implementation. Sanitation-related diseases, falls, and dependency are all on the rise among older people in underserved counties.
Challenges older persons face
Older persons face multiple barriers to accessing safe and private sanitation:
· Physical barriers: Most pit latrines are not age friendly, with no support rails, uneven ground, narrow doors, or inadequate lighting.
· Health risks: Open defecation, lack of hygiene, and unsafe facilities contribute to waterborne illnesses and increased caregiving burdens.
· Social stigma: The lack of dignity in using unsafe facilities affects self-esteem and increases isolation among older persons.
Our Response: “Dignity in Every Drop” Campaign
The CPF Foundation, in partnership with individuals, corporate partners, county governments, older persons associations, and local community groups, is launching the Swing with the Seniors fundraising campaign to promote the ‘’Dignity in Every Drop’’ campaign, a transformative initiative to deliver accessible, age-friendly sanitation to vulnerable older persons in Kenya.
